About Portal Valley

A Hobart consulting practice focused on programming counsel for AI-assisted internal tools — grounded in process interviews, not slide decks.

Why we exist

Australian organisations keep funding “AI tools” that never leave a pilot because nobody agreed which steps deserved assistance. Portal Valley Software Consulting was formed in Hobart to sit between operations, product, and engineering — translating strained processes into briefs builders can estimate without theatre.

Origin

The practice grew out of consulting work on internal case systems and operations tooling for teams who had already bought model access and still spent evenings in spreadsheets. We noticed the expensive moment was rarely the model call; it was the missing map of who owned each decision and which failures were acceptable.

How we work

We favour short, named engagements over open-ended “transformation” retainers. Discovery produces a brief. Workshops align sponsors. Build guidance stays available while your engineers ship. If a prototype already exists, a readiness review says stop, guard, or rewrite — in plain language.

People

Our consultants combine programming experience with facilitation. You will not get a sales engineer reading a vendor script. You will get someone who asks for the anonymised examples, watches the real process, and argues for the dull release that actually closes the loop.

Australia context

We work remote-first across Australia with a physical base in Hobart. Governing law for our agreements is Australian. Time zones and public-sector procurement realities are treated as constraints, not footnotes.

Values we will not drop

  • One process at a time in discovery — portfolios wait their turn
  • Human review stays visible in any assisted workflow we recommend
  • We decline work that requires fabricating urgency or concealing data risk
